Scoring method and validity

PTE uses the Global Scale of English (GSE) for scoring. The test score ranges from 10 to 90. The 80-point scale provides students with a complete assessment of their English proficiency.

The PTE scale assesses English language proficiency across several skill areas, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

What is the GSE scale?

GSE is a framework for scoring English proficiency designed by Pearson. According to the company, GSE is better than other assessment frameworks like the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). GSE scale is the result of extensive global research and provides deep insights into learners’ abilities.

From August 2025, PTE uses a hybrid scoring model: AI evaluates all responses instantly, while human reviewers monitor for memorised or template-based responses. If your Speaking or Writing responses sound robotic or follow rigid scripts, the AI’s template detection may reduce your Content score. Natural, task-specific communication is rewarded.

Score validity: PTE Academic scores are valid for 2 years from the test date.

How to prepare for the PTE exam

PTE preparation requires understanding the exam format, practising each task type, and building time management skills. The new August 2025 format means preparation materials must be updated – older resources will not cover the two new Speaking tasks.

  • Use 2025/26 preparation materials only: Resources dated before August 2025 do not cover Respond to a Situation or Summarize Group Discussion.
  • Avoid rigid templates: The hybrid scoring model penalises memorised scripts. Focus on flexible, natural communication.
  • Prioritize Write from Dictation: This task contributes to both Listening and Writing scores. Spelling errors directly impact overall score.
  • Practice timed sections: The Speaking and Writing section runs up to 77 minutes. Essay (20 min) and Summarize Written Text (10 min) need strict time allocation.
