If you’re preparing for the PTE exam in 2026, you need to know that the exam pattern changed significantly from August 7, 2025. The format is not the same as what was tested before August 2025. This guide covers the updated PTE exam pattern for 2026 in full.
What is the PTE Exam?
The Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, administered by the Pearson PLC Group, is a language proficiency exam for students planning to study in English-speaking countries.
This exam is a key prerequisite for those applying to universities in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
It’s designed to thoroughly assess your skills in speaking, writing, reading, and listening, which are all vital for succeeding in graduate-level studies.
No matter what higher-education program you’re considering – whether an MS (Master of Science) program or an MBBS program- the PTE exam pattern is the same.
For 2025, the format of the PTE exam remains unchanged, continuing with its three-part structure:
- Speaking and Writing
- Reading
- Listening
The first part will take 54-67 minutes to complete, while the second and third parts take 30 minutes each.

PTE Exam Pattern Changes from August 2025
From August 7, 2025, Pearson introduced major updates to the PTE Academic exam. Every candidate booking the exam after this date is tested on the new format – the old format is no longer available. Here is what changed:

The 2026 PTE exam has 22 tasks across three sections (Speaking & Writing, Reading, Listening). Total test time is up to 2 hours 15 minutes.

PTE Scoring System 2026 – Hybrid AI + Human
From August 2025, PTE Academic uses a hybrid scoring model combining advanced AI with human oversight. This is a significant change from the previous AI-only scoring system. Here is what this means for your preparation:
- AI scores all responses instantly across Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening.
- Human reviewers monitor for memorised templates and flag responses that sound robotic or follow a rigid pattern. If your Describe Image or Essay answer uses a generic template without enough task-specific content, your Content score may drop significantly.
- Template detection is active: The AI is now trained to detect ‘rhythmic monotony’ – the flat, robotic tone used when reciting a memorised script. Flexible, natural communication is rewarded; rigid scripts are penalised.
- Score range unchanged: 10 to 90 overall. Scores for individual skills (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening) are also reported.

Section-wise Explanation of PTE Exam Pattern
1. Speaking and Writing (54-77 minutes)
The Speaking and Writing section now contains 10 task types – including the two new tasks added from August 2025. This section tests your ability to speak clearly, read aloud accurately, describe images, and write coherent essays and summaries.
The two new tasks – Respond to a Situation and Summarize Group Discussion – require spontaneous, real-life communication skills rather than prepared templates. Practice listening to group discussions and responding naturally to varied everyday scenarios to prepare for these.
2. Reading (29-30 minutes)
The Reading section contains 5 task types and tests your ability to understand academic texts, identify the correct order of ideas, and fill in missing words with the correct vocabulary. This section is unchanged from the previous format.
3. Listening (30-43 minutes)
The Listening section contains 7 task types. It tests your ability to understand spoken English in academic contexts, summarize what you hear, and write dictated sentences accurately. The Write from Dictation task carries significant scoring weight – errors in spelling affect your overall score.

Tips for the New PTE Exam Pattern 2026
- Do not rely on memorised templates: The 2026 hybrid scoring model actively penalises robotic, template-heavy responses. Use flexible structures and add task-specific content.
- Practise the 2 new tasks: Respond to a Situation and Summarize Group Discussion are new from August 2025. Dedicate specific practice time to these.
- Write From Dictation is high-value: This task contributes to both Listening and Writing scores. Perfect spelling is critical.
- Time management for S&W section: The Speaking and Writing section now runs up to 77 minutes. Budget your time – Essay (20 mins) and Summarize Written Text (10 mins) are the longest tasks.
- Use only 2025/26 preparation materials: Resources dated before August 2025 will not include the 2 new tasks or the updated scoring guidance.
