Cornell’s main campus is in Ithaca, about 4 to 5 hours from New York City by road, so it is a New York State university rather than a New York City one. Students who want to live in the city should look at Columbia, NYU, CUNY, Fordham or Cornell Tech.

Why Study in New York?

• Industry access: finance, media, technology, fashion, healthcare and the United Nations are all based in or around the city, which helps with internships and networking.
• Range of choice: Ivy League, large private research universities and low-cost public colleges all sit within a few subway stops of each other.
• Cost: New York is among the most expensive US cities, so rent and daily costs often decide the budget as much as tuition does.

Tuition Fees at New York Universities (Latest Published)

Tuition differs a lot by school and program. Cornell’s professional master’s programs, Columbia’s business, journalism and public affairs schools and NYU’s Stern and Tandon schools all charge their own rates, so use the figure for your specific program. A 30-credit CUNY master’s at $855 per credit comes to about $25,650 (₹24.8 lakh) in tuition alone, plus fees. Add living costs of roughly $25,000 to $40,000 a year in New York City as a planning estimate, and confirm housing costs with the university.

Columbia University

Columbia is an Ivy League research university in Morningside Heights, Manhattan. It ranks joint 15th in the US News 2026 National list and joint 43rd in QS 2027. Graduate programs are spread across schools such as Columbia Engineering (SEAS), the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the School of International and Public Affairs, the Business School and the Journalism School, each with its own application and deadline.

• Tuition: the most recent Columbia office of institutional research table we could confirm lists Columbia Engineering at about $2,462 per point for 2023-24 (Columbia OPIR tuition rates). Current-year rates are higher and differ by school, so read the school’s own tuition page.
• Tests: GRE, GMAT or no test depending on the program, plus TOEFL or IELTS for international applicants. Requirements change, so check each program page.
• Deadlines: set by each school and program, many in December to January for fall entry. Confirm on the program page.

New York University (NYU)

NYU is a private research university with its main campus in Greenwich Village and professional schools such as Stern (business), Tandon (engineering) and the School of Professional Studies. It ranks joint 32nd in the US News 2026 National list and 58th in QS 2027.

• Tuition: NYU’s School of Professional Studies lists $2,896 per credit for its MS in Project Management. Other schools charge different rates.
• Tests: GRE or GMAT where a program asks for it, and an English test for most international applicants.
• Deadlines: vary by school and intake, so use the page of the program you want.

Cornell University

Cornell ranks 12th in the US News 2026 National list and joint 16th in QS 2027. The main campus is in Ithaca, and Cornell Tech runs in New York City. Cornell’s 2026-27 graduate tuition for research master’s students is $29,500 per year at the endowed rate and $20,800 at the statutory rate, while professional master’s programs have separate rates.

CUNY: Baruch College and Hunter College

The City University of New York is the city’s public system. Its colleges charge a flat $855 per credit for most non-resident master’s programs (Fall 2025), with higher rates and fees for some programs such as nursing, accounting and social work. Baruch is known for business, finance and accounting. Hunter offers a wide range of arts, sciences and health programs. These are usually the lowest-cost route into New York City.

Other Options: Fordham, Pace and More

Fordham University and Pace University also offer business, data and technology master’s programs in the city at private-university prices. Compare program curriculum, internship access and total cost with the universities above before you decide.

Eligibility and Admission Requirements

• Academic background: a 3-year or 4-year bachelor’s degree; Indian degrees of 4 years are accepted more widely, so check each program.

Work Rights After Graduation: OPT and STEM OPT

F-1 students can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) for up to 12 months after completing their degree. Graduates of eligible STEM degrees can apply for a further 24-month extension, as explained by USCIS on STEM OPT. Check that your program is on the STEM designated degree list.
