The USA is one of the best countries for an MS in Electrical Engineering because of its research funding, industry links and range of programs. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, all of the top five universities for Electrical and Electronic Engineering are in the US or Singapore, and three of them (MIT, Stanford and UC Berkeley) are American.
Demand for the skills is also steady. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 7% employment growth for electrical and electronics engineers from 2024 to 2034, with about 17,500 openings a year on average, compared with 3% for all occupations.

STEM OPT and H-1B: What International Students Should Know
An MS in Electrical Engineering is a STEM-designated program. After graduation you can work for 12 months on OPT and apply for a 24-month STEM extension, giving up to 36 months of US work experience.
Two recent changes matter for the next step after OPT:
- Wage-weighted H-1B lottery: Since the FY 2027 cap season, the random H-1B lottery has been replaced by a selection process weighted by the wage level the employer offers (final rule effective 27 February 2026). A higher offered wage level improves your selection odds.
- $100,000 H-1B fee: A September 2025 proclamation introduced a $100,000 fee on certain new H-1B petitions. It has not generally applied to in-US change of status from F-1 or OPT, but it has been challenged in court, so read our explainer on the H-1B fee ruling and check the latest guidance.
DHS has also finalised a rule ending “duration of status” for F-1 students, scheduled to take effect on 15 September 2026, which replaces open-ended stay with a fixed admission period. Confirm the current rule with your university’s international student office. For the full path, read our OPT in the USA guide.
