Biochemical Engineering Abroad 2026: Top Universities, Tests, Eligibility and Careers

✦ Summary

Biochemical engineering applies chemical engineering to biological systems, such as making vaccines, enzymes, biofuels and food ingredients at industrial scale. Few universities offer a degree with exactly that name, so Indian students usually apply to chemical engineering, biological engineering, bioengineering or biotechnology master’s programs with a bioprocess focus. For example, UC Berkeley’s nonresident graduate fees are about $41,175 per year for new master’s students (about ₹39.9 lakh) for 2026-27, MIT’s biological engineering department does not accept GRE scores, and US chemical engineers had a median pay of $125,040 (about ₹1.21 crore) in May 2025.

Table of Contents

What Is Biochemical Engineering?

Biochemical engineering takes a process that works in a lab flask and designs it to run reliably in tanks holding thousands of litres. The main areas are:

  • Upstream processing: growing cells or microbes in bioreactors under controlled conditions.
  • Downstream processing: separating and purifying the product, for example a protein or an antibody.
  • Metabolic and protein engineering: redesigning cells or enzymes so they make more of a useful product.
  • Process design and scale-up: moving from lab to pilot to full production.
  • Quality control and analytics: proving that every batch meets purity and safety standards.

Typical employers are pharmaceutical and biotech companies, food and beverage producers, biofuel and environmental firms, and contract manufacturers.

How to Find Biochemical Engineering Programs Abroad

Because the degree name varies, search by subject and read the curriculum. Look for courses in bioprocess engineering, bioreactor design, fermentation, separations, biochemical kinetics and biomanufacturing, and for faculty with industry links. Check three things before you shortlist:

  • Degree type: a coursework or professional master’s is common for jobs; a research master’s or PhD leads towards R&D.
  • Admission route: some departments admit only their own undergraduates to master’s programs.
  • STEM designation: check that the program’s CIP code is on the STEM list, which matters for the 24-month OPT extension.

Universities to Consider in the USA

Universities with strong chemical, biological or bioengineering departments include MIT, UC Berkeley, Stanford, Caltech and the University of Pennsylvania. Two examples show why you must read each department’s rules:

  • MIT Biological Engineering: the department’s page lists a Master of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering open only to MIT undergraduates, and a PhD. The department does not accept GRE scores, and the PhD application deadline is 1 December (MIT Biological Engineering). For an Indian master’s applicant, MIT is therefore a PhD route rather than a master’s route.
  • UC Berkeley (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering): nonresident graduate academic fees are listed at about $20,588 per semester for new master’s students in 2026-27, roughly $41,175 per year (about ₹39.9 lakh), and the page notes figures may change (UC Berkeley fee schedule). Self-supporting professional programs can charge differently.

Always confirm the current degree options, deadlines and test rules on each department’s own page, because they change from year to year.

Eligibility and Tests

  • Academic background: a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, biotechnology, biochemical engineering or a related field, with strong chemistry, biology and mathematics.
  • GRE: policy varies by department. MIT Biological Engineering does not accept it; many others make it optional or required. Check each page.
  • English: TOEFL or IELTS for most international applicants. See IELTS score for USA universities.
  • Documents: transcripts, statement of purpose, CV, recommendation letters and any research or industry experience. See SOP for the USA.

Cost of Studying Biochemical Engineering Abroad

Use the university’s own fee page for your program. As a reference point, UC Berkeley’s nonresident graduate fees of about $41,175 per year equal roughly ₹39.9 lakh at ₹96.8 per dollar, before housing, food and insurance. PhD programs, such as MIT’s, are usually funded with tuition coverage and a stipend, which can remove tuition cost entirely. See cost of an MS in the USA and education loan for studying in the USA.

Careers and Salary

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics does not have a separate biochemical engineer category, so chemical engineers are the closest benchmark. They had a median annual pay of $125,040 in May 2025, with 5% projected growth from 2025 to 2035. At ₹96.8 per dollar, that is about ₹1.21 crore. Bioprocess and biomanufacturing roles are often listed under process development, manufacturing or quality titles, and pay varies by employer and city.

  • Process development engineer
  • Bioprocess or manufacturing engineer
  • Quality and validation engineer
  • Research scientist (usually after a PhD)
  • Regulatory affairs specialist

F-1 graduates can apply for 12 months of OPT, and eligible STEM degrees add a 24-month extension. See OPT in the USA guide 2026 and STEM courses in the USA.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between chemical and biochemical engineering?

Chemical engineering covers chemical and physical processes in many industries. Biochemical engineering focuses on processes that use cells, enzymes or biological molecules.

Which degree should I apply for abroad?

Apply for chemical engineering, biological engineering, bioengineering or biotechnology programs that offer bioprocess courses, since few schools have a degree titled biochemical engineering.

Do I need the GRE?

It depends on the department. MIT’s biological engineering department does not accept GRE scores; others may require or recommend it.

How long does the course take?

A bachelor’s degree usually takes 4 years in India. Master’s programs abroad often take 1 to 2 years, and PhDs typically take several years.

Can I work after the degree?

Yes. On an F-1 visa you can apply for OPT, with a STEM extension if your degree qualifies.
