How to Judge Whether a UK University Is Affordable

• Tuition: compare the fee for your exact course and year, not the university’s average.
• Living costs: London is much more expensive than Sunderland or Chester, so location can save more than the fee gap.
• Scholarships and discounts: many universities give automatic or merit discounts, which can cut the fee by thousands of pounds.
• Part-time work: degree-level students can generally work up to 20 hours a week in term time under the Student visa, but part-time pay rarely covers tuition.

Tuition Fees at Affordable UK Universities (2026-27, Latest Published)

Fees are for the course year stated and can change, so confirm on the university’s fee page. We could not confirm 2026-27 international fees for Cumbria, Sunderland, Liverpool Hope, the University of the Highlands and Islands (taught courses) and Wolverhampton from official pages, so check those directly. Several are well known for lower fees and discounts, but compare each course.

The University of the Highlands and Islands lists research postgraduate international fees of £16,258 (arts) and £20,488 (science) for 2026/27 starters (UHI), which is higher than its taught fees, so do not use the research figure for a taught master’s.

Scholarships and Discounts

• Bedfordshire: Global Merit Scholarship of £3,000 off total course fees (75% GPA or equivalent), Global Subject-Specific Merit up to £4,000, Vice-Chancellor’s Postgraduate Scholarship £1,000 and a £1,000 a year prompt-payment discount. Undergraduate High Achievers scholarships of £3,000 a year apply for students from India and some other countries (Bedfordshire).
• Leeds Trinity: international scholarships awarded automatically on a successful application, plus alumni discounts (Leeds Trinity).
• Chester: an International Scholarship Award for eligible students, with value set by the university (Chester).
• Derby: postgraduate scholarships and bursaries from £100 to £5,000 (Derby).

Visa and Living Funds You Must Add

The funds are in addition to the first-year tuition you must be able to pay, and they must be held for 28 days. Always check the GOV.UK page for the current amounts.

Affordable Universities by Subject

Fees vary by subject, and MBA, law and design are often priced differently from medicine and laboratory courses. Leeds Trinity lists its MBA at £15,250 and several business, data science and law master’s at £15,000, while Chester lists its MBA at £15,700 (2026-27). Tips to Manage Expenses in the UK

• Choose a university outside London and the South East, where rent is usually lower.
• Use student discounts, a railcard for train travel and public transport passes.
• Cook at home, buy second-hand books and share accommodation.
• Pay fees early if the university offers a prompt-payment discount, as Bedfordshire does.
• Keep a buffer for exchange-rate movements when you send money from India.
