About the University of Queensland

UQ is a public research university founded in 1909 in Queensland, Australia. Its main campuses are St Lucia (Brisbane), Gatton, Herston and Dutton Park, and it offers programmes across engineering and IT, business, humanities and social sciences, health and medicine, and science. Students come from many countries, with China and India among its largest international groups.

Rankings change every year. A university’s overall rank is not the same as its rank for your subject, so check subject rankings as well.

Courses and Programmes

• Engineering and IT: Computer Science, Data Science, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, and professional engineering masters in bioengineering, chemical and civil engineering.
• Business and economics: MBA, Business Analytics, finance, economics and related programmes.
• Agriculture and science: Agricultural Science, Agribusiness, Animal Science and related programmes.
• Humanities and social sciences: International Relations, Psychology, Governance and Public Policy and others.
• Health and medicine: Clinical, health and medical programmes, with their own entry rules.

Programme names, length and campus differ by degree, so confirm each one on UQ’s programme page before you shortlist.

Eligibility and Admission Requirements

• Academic: most master’s programmes need a relevant bachelor’s degree. UQ uses a 7-point GPA scale, and a minimum GPA of 4.5 was listed on our earlier version for many programmes. Requirements differ by programme, so check the one you want.
• English: UQ accepts IELTS, TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic. Many master’s programmes ask for an IELTS overall score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0, but each programme sets its own score. See IELTS vs TOEFL.
• MBA: a four-year bachelor’s degree and relevant work experience are typical, but check the MBA page for the current rules.
• Documents: transcripts, English test score, CV, statement of purpose where asked, and references.

Applicants who do not meet entry requirements may be able to join a pathway programme, so check UQ’s pathway options.

• Step 1: choose a programme on UQ’s website.
• Step 2: check entry and English requirements.
• Step 3: apply through UQ’s online application portal with your documents.
• Step 4: track your application, accept the offer and pay the deposit.

Our earlier version listed deadlines of 31 January for Semester 1, 30 June for Semester 2 and 31 October for the Summer Semester. Deadlines change, so confirm the dates for your intake on UQ’s international applicant page. Apply early, because visa processing takes time.

Tuition Fees at UQ (2026 International Rates)

Source: UQ 2026 full-fee-paying rates. To estimate a programme’s total fee, multiply the per-unit rate by the number of units. For example, a 32-unit Master of Agricultural Science would be about AUD 108,192 and a 16-unit MBA about AUD 69,112, if those unit counts are right on UQ’s programme pages. Rates differ by the year you commence, and we have not converted to rupees because the AUD rate moves; convert at the current rate for your budget.

Visa and Funds for Australia

• Funds: one third-party guide lists AUD 29,710 for 12 months of living costs, plus AUD 2,000 for travel and first-year tuition (Australia student visa 2026 guide). Check the Department of Home Affairs for the current amount.
• Visa charge: the same guide lists AUD 2,500 from 1 July 2026, not refunded after a refusal. Confirm the current charge on the Home Affairs website.
• Family: the guide says that from 2 October 2026 most students cannot bring a partner or children, with exceptions such as PhD students and students on full government scholarships.
• Work: up to 48 hours a fortnight during term and unlimited during scheduled breaks.
• Genuine Student requirement: answer the questions with specific reasons for your course, provider and career plan. Generic answers raise refusal risk.

Scholarships at UQ

UQ and Australian programmes offer scholarships, but amounts, eligibility and windows change each cycle. Our earlier version listed Destination Australia at AUD 15,000 a year for up to 2 years for some agriculture-related masters, and a Science International award of AUD 5,000 off one semester. Those cycles have closed, so check UQ’s scholarship pages for the year you apply.

Campus Life and Accommodation

UQ’s main St Lucia campus is in Brisbane, with residential colleges, university housing and private rentals nearby. Gatton is a regional campus. Rents and housing options change every year, so check the UQ accommodation page and apply early, since on-campus places fill quickly.
