Do you dream of applying to an Ivy League school but shy away when you see the high costs? Well, keep reading to step closer to your dream. Read our article about Financial aid and Scholarships at Columbia University for international students.

The biggest deterrents for international students who want to study in the USA are the scary tuition costs involved. Columbia University is an Ivy League school that offers some of the world’s best programs. However, an average of $84,000 is incurred per academic year.

International students incur more expenses than local students due to the process of relocation from across the world. Naturally, a relief in tuition costs goes a long way.

Approaching banks and financial institutions is daunting and intimidating for most students. We, at FundRight, realize that.

You must be aware of some of the most sought-after scholarships for Indian students. For instance:

  • Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship
  • The KC Mahindra Education Trust Scholarship

However, in this article, you will find a list of Undergraduate Scholarships, Graduate Scholarships, and External Scholarships offered to international students. We have also included the application process for each scholarship scheme.

Columbia University offers up to 100% financial aid to international students, regardless of citizenship. All financial aid offered by Columbia University is need-based, and merit-based or talent-based scholarships are not provided.

Types of financial assistance for Columbia University students

Columbia University has always been deeply committed to supporting international students through different financial aid options. The university offers substantial financial aid each year amounting to over $19 million which makes it possible for international students to pursue their educational goals. If the student requires, Columbia University provides 100% of the cost of education.

The main forms of financial assistance include:

Columbia Grant

This is a need-based grant that does not require repayment. It is awarded based on financial need. The student has to apply on the university’s portal for financial aid at the time of admission.

School-Based Scholarships

International students can apply for various scholarships such as Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund and Shardashish Interschool Fellowship. These are offered by specific schools within Columbia.

These awards are usually based on financial need but might also consider academic merit.

Student Employment

Students from abroad can easily contribute towards their educational costs through part-time work. Columbia offers both federal work-study and casual student employment opportunities on campus.

Internal Columbia University scholarships

While Columbia does not offer merit-based scholarships, there are multiple internal scholarship opportunities for international students based on financial need:

Need-Based Aid

All admitted international students who have sufficient financial need are eligible for Columbia’s need-based aid packages. These include grants and work-study opportunities.

Start-Up Grants

Incoming first-year students from low-income families may receive a $2,000 start-up grant. This is a huge help to cover initial expenses related to the transition to college.

Departmental Funding

Some academic departments may offer funding opportunities for students. Students should directly contact their respective departments to inquire about available assistantships and similar positions.

Scholarship application form process

International students seeking financial aid at Columbia University must follow these steps:

Complete the CSS Profile

Unlike domestic students who use FAFSA, international applicants must submit the College Scholarship Service (CSS) Profile when they apply for financial aid. This form helps determine a student’s eligibility for need-based aid.

Provide Required Documentation

Along with the CSS Profile, a student who has financial need has to submit additional documentation that outlines their family’s financial situation. This usually includes tax returns, bank statements, and other relevant financial information. You can also write an application letter for financial aid with details about your situation.

Declare Financial Need During Admission

International applicants need to inform about their need for financial assistance during the admission process. This declaration has a role in the university’s assessment of their application. However, no worthy candidate is turned away from Columbia University for exhibiting financial need.

Consult Financial Aid Advisors

Students are encouraged to reach out to Columbia’s financial aid office for personalized guidance on the application process and to understand available options better.

If you do your research right, affording higher education abroad is easy. With the right set of financial aid options, you can attend your dream university.

It’s clear that with the right financial aid, studying abroad becomes more affordable. However, scholarships may not cover all expenses, and for many students, taking an education loan is the next step. You need to ensure that you get the best loan deal with the lowest interest rate, as even a small difference in rates can save you a significant amount over the repayment period.

This is where FundRight helps. Instead of spending hours researching different lenders, FundRight brings them to you. It’s an AI-powered platform that allows you to compare offers from over 15 top lenders, including public banks and international NBFCs, with just one application. This saves you time and ensures you get the most competitive loan options available.

With FundRight, you can see personalized loan offers tailored to your academic and financial profile. The platform takes the confusion out of the process by letting lenders “bid” for your loan, meaning you’ll receive the best rates possible. Some students have saved up to ₹23 lakhs through FundRight by securing lower interest rates and other benefits.

So, if you’re planning to finance your education abroad, get started with FundRight today to secure the best loan deal for your studies.
