But what are the Duolingo exam eligibility criteria?

We’ll answer all your questions about Duolingo exam eligibility in this blog.

What is the Duolingo exam?

Before we discuss the Duolingo exam eligibility criteria, let’s understand the Duolingo exam.

The Duolingo English Test (DET), popularly referred to as the Duolingo exam, is an English proficiency test. It is accepted by 5,000+ universities and institutions across the globe.

The DET or Duolingo exam’s concept is similar to the TOEFL and IELTS exams. However, the test structure and scoring vary.

Some of the key features of DET that contribute to its soaring popularity include:

  • It’s a completely online test. You can take it from anywhere on a computer. The only eligibility to write the Duolingo exam is a stable Internet, a webcam and a mic.
  • Compared to other options, DET is quicker. It is a one-hour test.
  • DET is also cheaper than other standardized English proficiency tests. It costs $59, that’s around ₹4,800.
  • The difficulty of the questions adjusts as you answer them. This means the DET tailors itself to your skill level.
  • The DET doesn’t just assess your English reading and writing abilities. It also assesses your English listening and speaking skills.

Now let us see who is eligible for the Duolingo exam.

Duolingo eligibility criteria

The Duolingo entrance exam eligibility is very broad. This allows several kinds of study abroad aspirants to take the test.

In general, there is no specific educational qualification required to write the Duolingo exam. No matter what degree you have completed or are pursuing, you can take the DET.

Also, there are no specific Duolingo eligibility criteria for engineers. The Duolingo eligibility criteria for engineers are the same as the eligibility criteria for students from other non-technical fields.

Let’s understand the Duolingo eligibility for Indian students with some examples.

Candidate AgeEducational QualificationStudy Abroad Plan

25 yearsBBAMBA from B-school in Europe
22 yearsMBBSPost-graduate studies in medicine from Canada

This makes it clear that there is no Duolingo eligibility age.

Now let us see what are the documents required for Duolingo exam eligibility.

Documents required for Duolingo exam eligibility

The document-related eligibility of the Duolingo exam is pretty straightforward. The only document needed to meet the Duolingo exam eligibility is identity proof.

Which identification document meets the Duolingo exam eligibility? Usually, Duolingo accepts passports, driver’s license, or other government-issued photo IDs.

However, if we talk about Duolingo eligibility for Indian students, only a valid passport is accepted

Wish to take a practice Duolingo exam before the final attempt? Well, there are no Duolingo exam eligibility criteria for the test. You can take the test without a passport. The scores on the practice test will also NOT be valid.

What is Duolingo at-home eligibility?

Duolingo English Test is an Internet-based English proficiency test. This means you can easily give the DET at home.

While there are no specific Duolingo eligibility criteria for at-home test takers (as we explained earlier), there are certain technical requirements.

Here’s what you’ll need to ensure technical eligibility to write the Duolingo exam at home:

  • A computer or a laptop with either of the following specifications
    • Windows 7 or newer
    • macOS 10.12 or newer
    • Chrome OS (latest version)
    • Ubuntu 18.04 LTS or 20.04 LT
  • A working microphone
  • A working webcam
  • A web browser like:
    • Google Chrome
    • Mozilla Firefox
    • Microsoft Edge
  • A stable and high-speed internet connection. This is an important factor among Duolingo’s eligibility criteria as it ensures uninterrupted video streaming and test delivery.
  • A quiet and well-lit room so that you can take the test without distractions or interruptions.

What is the Duolingo eligibility for disabled candidates?

The Duolingo English Test aims to provide fair and equitable testing conditions for all candidates. This also includes candidates with disabilities.

There is no additional Duolingo entrance exam eligibility for candidates with disabilities. However, Duolingo offers accommodations to eligible candidates. These may include:

  • Additional time for completing the exam
  • Proctoring modifications
  • External aids that can be used during the exam

Require accommodations for the Duolingo English Test? You can submit a request using the provided form on this page.

How to prepare for the Duolingo exam?

To ensure Duolingo score eligibility specified by your preferred institution or ensure Duolingo scholarship eligibility, you need to properly prepare for the exam.

Important: DET tests your English proficiency, not memory power. This means memorizing questions before the test won’t help. You need to improve your English proficiency to prepare and pass the test.

Here’s how you can meet your Duolingo score requirement for a foreign education:

  • Conduct research about the test. Check out this helpful resource: DET video walkthrough.
  • Check the Test Readiness page to read the official guide for test takers. It offers details on question types, scoring, and the test experience.
  • Practice English daily using Duolingo Blog resources for everyday life practice.
  • Take the free practice test multiple times. This will help you get familiar with the question types.

These steps will help you ensure that you’re prepared to take the Duolingo English Test.
