IELTS Test Dates 2026 in India: How It Works
IELTS does not have a fixed annual dates schedule that you book from a printed list. Dates are available year-round and you choose from available slots on the IDP India or British Council portal in real time.
| Format | Availability | Dates per Year | Book Via |
| Paper-based IELTS | Fixed Thursdays and Saturdays | Approx. 48 dates/year | ieltsidpindia.com or britishcouncil.in |
| Computer-delivered IELTS | Daily — including weekends | 350+ slots/year | ieltsidpindia.com or britishcouncil.in |
| IELTS at Home | 24/7 — any day, any time | 365 days/year | ielts.idp.com/ielts-for-organisations |
Lakhs of students take the IELTS test every year. Therefore, if you want to write the test too, book your test well in advance to get the date and center you desire.
Hence, you can use the IELTS score even in the coming year, in case you don’t apply in the very same year.
Computer or Paper IELTS: Which Is Better for Indian Students?
| Factor | Paper-based | Computer-delivered |
| Results | 13 days | 3-5 days |
| One Skill Retake | Not available | Available within 60 days |
| Test dates | Fixed Thursdays/Saturdays, approx. 48/year | Daily, 350+ dates/year |
| Writing | Handwritten, black pen mandatory (Feb 2025) | Typed |
| Advance booking | 3-4 weeks minimum | Can book 48 hours before |
| Score | Identical | Identical |
Recommendation: For most Indian students, computer-delivered IELTS is the better choice: faster results, daily availability, and access to the One Skill Retake if one section score misses the target.
Black pen rule (February 2025): All paper-based IELTS tests now require a black ballpoint pen. Pencils are not permitted. The pen is provided at the test centre.
One Skill Retake: Computer-based IELTS candidates can retake one underperforming section (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) within 60 days, at approx. Rs. 7,500-8,000, instead of the full Rs. 19,000 retake.

When to Take IELTS: Planning by Application Deadline
Now that you’ve understood how IELTS dates work, make a note of when to take the test based on your target intake:
| Your Target Intake | Recommended IELTS Date | Why |
| USA/Canada Fall 2026 (Sep start) | April-May 2026 | Score + retake window before June-July application deadlines |
| UK September 2026 | March-April 2026 | Many UK deadlines fall in January-May |
| Australia Semester 2 2026 | April-May 2026 | Most Australian intakes start July-August |
| Ireland September 2026 | March-April 2026 | UCD, TCD early deadlines February-April |
| USA/Canada Fall 2027 (Sep start) | October-December 2026 | Book well ahead for peak season |
Golden rule: Take IELTS at least 8-10 weeks before your application deadline. This allows time for results (13 days paper / 3-5 days computer), one retake if needed, and document preparation.
