Masters of the Future: for the “Ranchos,” Not the “Chaturs”

There’s a scene in 3 Idiots that every Indian knows.

It’s Teacher’s Day at ICE.

Chatur, the guy who studies 16 hours a day, who follows every rule, who does everything “right”, gets up on stage to deliver a Hindi speech.

He didn’t write it.

He doesn’t even understand Hindi well enough to know what he’s saying.

He got the librarian to write it for him, and he memorized every word.

Rancho, being Rancho, swaps two words in the speech.

“Chamatkar” becomes “balatkar.”

“Dhan” becomes “stann.”

Chatur delivers the whole thing with complete confidence.

Chatur (1)

Everyone laughed. I did, and probably you did too.

But here’s the thing I keep thinking about, years later: Chatur did everything the system asked him to do, exactly.

He prepared. He memorized. He delivered. And he still ended up saying something he didn’t understand, in front of everyone who mattered.

Now tell me this: doesn’t the study abroad process work the same way?

The study abroad process has a Chatur problem

I get the chance to speak to hundreds of students every month.

Sadly, it’s obvious to me that 9 out of 10 students make the most important decisions about studying abroad (what, where, when) based on someone’s advice.

  • Score X on the GRE.
  • Hire Y consultant.
  • Write your SOP using the template your senior sent on WhatsApp.
  • Apply to the same 8 universities everyone applies to, because someone in a Facebook group said they’re “safe.”

Nobody stops to ask: do I actually understand why I am picking this program? Have I ever spoken to someone who studied there? Do I know what the classroom feels like, what the job market looks like after, whether this is actually right for me?

The answer, almost always, is no.

And here’s what makes it worse: this formula works best for people who can afford the best consultants, the best test prep, the best packaging. A student from a top college in a metro city with a well-connected family will always have an easier time than a student from Raipur or Nagpur who might be ten times sharper but has no access to these expensive resources.

Masters of the Future (MOTF), now in its 3rd year, is the biggest proof of what can happen if all the walls are razed and students are offered a chance to show what they are made of, to the people who can offer them life changing scholarships, eye-opening mentorship, and dream-come-true opportunities.

Rancho told Chatur in the movie, “You’re boarding the wrong train. Become such a brilliant engineer that success follows you, not the other way around.”

Chatur replied: “These philosophies don’t work in the real world.”

MOTF is a leaf out of Rancho’s book of philosophy.

MOTF is built for Ranchos

MOTF is a national competition organized by GradRight in partnership with US universities like WashU Olin Business School, Rutgers Business School, Lehigh, Tulane, and University of San Diego.

It’s for final-year students and working professionals who are serious about a master’s abroad

But it’s not a quiz. It’s not a GRE. It’s not another standardized test.

You submit a real project, which can be something you’ve actually built or researched. If it’s strong, you go through a real interview where people test how you think, not what you’ve memorized.

Do well there, and you present at zonal level. The top 30 from across India make it to the 2-day online finale on April 18–19, 2026.

And the people evaluating you through all of this are the ones who actually matter: university admissions teams and CXOs from companies like PolicyBazaar, Delhivery, and MobiKwik.

There’s a lot to win:

  • There’s a ₹5 Crore scholarship pool from partner universities, which is the largest in India for anything like this.
  • There’s mentorship from people like Sarbvir Singh, CEO of PolicyBazaar, Kapil Bharati, co-founder of Delhivery, and Bipin Preet Singh, CEO of MobiKwik.
  • There’s direct admission considerations from WashU, Rutgers, Lehigh, Tulane, University of San Diego, and University of South Dakota.
  • And there’s over ₹4 lakhs in prizes, plus sponsored flight tickets to the US for the winning team.

And here’s the part that matters most. This competition doesn’t care where you went to college. It doesn’t care if your parents are rich. It doesn’t care if your LinkedIn looks impressive. It cares about how your mind works.

Remember Rancho’s real identity? He wasn’t Ranchoddas Chanchad, the rich man’s son. He was Chhote (the gardener’s kid) who studied in someone else’s name because he couldn’t afford his own education. He had no network, no money, no family connections. Everything he achieved came from how he thought.

MOTF isn’t testing for Chatur-type smart. It’s testing for Rancho-type smart.

No need to wait 10 years to find out who you are

In the movie, Chatur carves a date on the wall. He tells Rancho: come back in 10 years, let’s see who’s more successful. A decade later, Chatur is a VP showing off his car and his salary. Rancho is Phunsukh Wangdu. He has 400 patents, a school in Ladakh, and is living entirely on his own terms. Chatur spent 10 years chasing success. Rancho spent 10 years chasing excellence. You already know which one the world rewarded.

MOTF isn’t going to make you wait 10 years to find out who you are. It takes 2 days. April 18–19, 2026. Online. From wherever you are.

If you’ve ever felt like the system doesn’t see you, this is your platform.

Chaturs can sit this one out. Ranchos — we’ll see you in April.
