It was founded in 1972 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick, and became a university in September 1989. UL's campus is situated on both sides of the River Shannon, covering a significant area of land. The university offers a cooperative education program that provides students with the opportunity to gain work experience as part of their degree. The institution has had several presidents over the years, with Professor Kerstin Mey currently serving as the president.
