What is the GMAT exam?
GMAT, short for the Graduate Management Admission Test, is a standardized test required to pursue a graduate program in management abroad. Many Indian business schools also accept GMAT scores for admission.
The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) is the conducting authority of the exam. This 3 hours and 7 minutes long test comprises 4 parts:
- Quantitative Reasoning (QR)
- Verbal Reasoning (VR)
- Integrated Reasoning (IR)
- Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)
Here’s a clear breakdown of the scoring system:
- Main GMAT Score (200-800): This score combines your performance in the Quantitative and Verbal sections. Most test-takers score between 400 and 600.
- Section Scores: The GMAT has separate scores for Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) and Integrated Reasoning (IR). These do not impact your main score but are important individually:
- AWA: Scored on a scale of 0-6.
- IR: Scored on a scale of 1-8.
- Percentile Rankings: Your main score also comes with a percentile ranking, indicating how you performed relative to other test-takers. For example, a score of 700 is around the 89th percentile.
To increase your chances of getting into Ivy League or top business schools, aim for a score between 690 and 700.
