An English language proficiency test is a must-have for all study abroad aspirants. The test is a key first step before you can go abroad for higher education. The good part is that there are several test options available for you to choose from. Two of the most popular English language proficiency tests include IELTS and PTE.  Both tests serve the purpose of proving your English language proficiency. However, they are different in several ways.

Selecting which test to attempt is an important decision. So how can you make the choice? It is by understanding the nuances of both IELTS and PTE.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the key differences between IELTS and PTE. Let’s dive right in.

Differences between IELTS and PTE

Understanding the disparities between the IELTS and PTE is essential for prospective test-takers. So let’s delve into the key differences between these English language proficiency tests:

1. Test Format Options

IELTS PTE
IELTS offers both computer-delivered and paper-based exams.

The paper-based test allows for traditional pen-and-paper answering.

The computer-delivered test offers digital answering with features like adjustable font sizes.

PTE is an exclusively computer-based test. All test sections, including Speaking, are completed on a computer.

2. Examination Structure and Format

IELTS PTE
Comprises four separate sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each section is taken separately. The Speaking test can be scheduled on a different day from the other sections. Combines Speaking and Writing into a single section. Reading and Listening are separate sections. The test is designed to be completed in one sitting.

3. Test-taking Rules

IELTS PTE
Candidates can navigate back and forth between questions within a section. They can skip questions and return to them later. This flexibility can help students manage time better and reduce anxiety. Candidates must answer each question before moving on to the next. Also, candidates cannot revisit previous questions once answered.

4. Grading and Scoring

IELTS PTE
Scores are given on a scale from 0 to 9 for each section, with an overall band score calculated as the average. There is no negative marking. Uses a granular score scale from 10 to 90, with scores calculated through an automated system. There is negative marking in the Reading and Listening sections.

5. Speaking Test Assessment

IELTS PTE
The Speaking test is conducted face-to-face with a real-life examiner. It consists of an interview-style conversation. This personal interaction allows for natural dialogue and immediate feedback. The Speaking section is computer-based, with candidates recording their responses into a microphone. The responses are checked by computer algorithms based on pronunciation, intonation, and fluency. This method removes human bias but might feel less personal for some test-takers.

Which is easier, IELTS or PTE?

There is no simple answer to the question. Deciding between IELTS and PTE in terms of ease depends on various factors. Of course, individual preferences are also at play.

For starters, neither of the two exams can be called easy or difficult. Both are meant to test candidates on their English language skills. However, the exam pattern and structure differ. This difference might make people feel that one is easier than the other. For example, IELTS does not have a fixed number of questions. So those who like knowing how many questions to expect may find PTE easier to attempt. Others might find the modular IELTS format easier as it allows breaks in between.

Also, the face-to-face nature of IELTS Speaking can be daunting for some. The controlled environment of PTE’s computer-based assessment might be more agreeable to some candidates.

Similarly, comfort with typing on a computer can influence your preference.  Those who prefer typing would find PTE easier. Those who prefer writing might find the paper-based IELTS test easier.

Should I take the IELTS or PTE?

Deciding between IELTS and PTE is a crucial decision that must be taken after considering several factors.  Let us look at the 5 key factors that you should consider when deciding deciding between PTE & IELTS.

Purpose of taking the test

Identify why you need the test results. If you need it for academic purposes, check which test your institution prefers.

Test format preferences

IELTS is a modular test, so different sections are taken separately. PTE is a single-session test where all sections are completed in one sitting. If you prefer spreading out your tests over multiple sections, IELTS might be better for you. If you feel more comfortable completing everything in one go, then PTE could be a better fit.

Scoring requirements

Check the score requirements of the institution where you want to submit the scores. For example, some universities may require a higher score in one section than another. Compare how achievable these scores are for you in each test.

Test availability and convenience

Evaluate the availability of test dates and locations for both IELTS and PTE in your region. If there are limited test centers for one test in your area, the other might be more accessible. PTE generally offers more frequent test dates and quicker results.

Personal experience and preparation

Reflect on your experience with similar standardized tests. Have you already taken a test like IELTS before and feel comfortable with its format? Then it might be easier for you to prepare for. On the other hand, if you prefer computer-based tests, PTE might suit you better. Consider your strengths and which test format you feel more prepared for.

Scenarios for Choosing IELTS or PTE

Choose IELTS if:

  • You prefer a test format with breaks between sections
  • Face-to-face speaking assessment is more comfortable for you
  • Institutions you are applying to specifically require IELTS scores

Choose PTE if:

  • You excel in single-session tests and prefer completing all sections at once
  • Computer-based speaking assessment suits your preferences
  • Test availability and convenience are key factors, with more frequent test dates

These details can help you make an informed choice and boost your chances of getting a desired score.

FAQs

Is IELTS globally more recognized than PTE?

Both IELTS and PTE are widely recognized by universities, colleges, and governments worldwide.

IELTS is accepted by 11,500 organizations across 140+ English-speaking countries. Some of these countries include the USA, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland.

The PTE website also specifies 3,600+ institutions worldwide, which accept PTE scores. It also mentions the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Ireland as the countries accepting PTE.

This means both tests are equally popular across the globe. However, specific institutions may have preferences for one test over the other. So make sure you check the test requirements before applying.

Can I switch between IELTS and PTE if I change my mind after registering?

No. IELTS and PTE are standardized English proficiency tests offered by different institutions.

The PTE is offered by Pearson PLC Group. IELTS is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge English.

So it is not possible to switch between IELTS and PTE. If you want to switch, you will have to cancel the selected test and register for the other one separately. The set cancellation charges will apply. Plus, to register for the other test, you’ll have to pay the full amount.

How soon should I start preparing for IELTS or PTE?

There is no specific preparation timeline for PTE or IELTS. It depends on your English proficiency levels and familiarity with the test format.

In general, it is recommended to start preparing 4-6 weeks before the test date. If you have more time or you are not very proficient in English, you might want to start earlier. This will help you gradually progress and improve your skills.

Can I request a remark (re-evaluation) of my IELTS or PTE test results?

Yes, both IELTS and PTE offer a remarking process.

PTE is a machine-scored test. So you can request a machine rescore only for spoken and open-ended written questions. The process costs $125 but if your score changes, this fee is refunded. You can contact the PTE customer support team by phone within 14 days of getting the score to request a rescore.

For IELTS, this process is also called Enquiry on Results. You can request an Enquiry on Results within 6 weeks of the IELTS test date. You can submit the request for a complete or specific re-evaluation. For IELTS EOR fees, you have to contact your local test center. If your IELTS band scores change, the fee is fully refunded.

How can I improve my English language skills before taking IELTS or PTE?

Proper practice can help improve your English skills before the PTE or IELTS. Some tips include:

  • Familiarize yourself with the test patterns so that you know what to expect on the test.
  • Use resources such as practice tests, online courses, and free materials available online.
  • Focus on developing all skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Read books, listen to podcasts or shows, and converse in English, wherever possible.
  • Take timed tests and simulate test-like conditions to build confidence.

All these steps will help you enhance your overall English proficiency and confidence.
