The latest Open Doors report shows India at the top of the international student list, reinforcing the long-standing appeal of the United States for global learners.
Indian students are choosing the United States in record numbers, according to the Open Doors 2025 report released this week. Despite increased documentation requirements and longer visa processing timelines, the U.S. hosted 1.2 million international students in the 2024 to 2025 academic year, marking a five percent rise from the previous cycle. India led all sending countries with 363,019 students, a ten percent increase that highlights strong confidence in American universities, research ecosystems, and career pathways.
This growth comes at a time when international students continue to play a vital role in the U.S. economy. The U.S. Department of Commerce reported that global students contributed nearly 55 billion dollars in 2024 and supported more than 355,000 jobs. The appeal of the U.S. also remains strong across degree levels. Undergraduate numbers rose four percent, while participation in Optional Practical Training grew twenty one percent, with more students gaining hands on experience in technology, engineering, and other high demand fields.
