The Duolingo English Test is an online, proctored English proficiency exam that many universities accept as an alternative to IELTS or TOEFL. It is cheaper and faster, but it works very differently from a paper test, so the right study material matters more than the number of books you buy.
Compare it with other exams in our guide to English proficiency tests at a glance, and for the full exam overview read the Duolingo exam guide.
What Is the Duolingo English Test and Why Is It Popular?
- Convenience: taken online from home, any time you are ready.
- Cost: $70 per test (about Rs 6,800 at roughly Rs 96.8 per US dollar in October 2026). Check the official site for the latest price. For comparison, the IELTS fee in India is Rs 19,000 from 1 April 2026.
- Speed: results in about 2 days, according to Duolingo.
- Adaptive format: question difficulty changes with your answers, and the number of questions varies.
- Reporting: certified scores are valid for two years and can be sent to institutions, along with your writing and speaking samples.
Acceptance depends on each university and program, so always check the admissions page of your target university. The official DET website lists how to send scores. Read our list of UK universities accepting Duolingo too.
Top Preparation Books and Study Material for the DET
Because the DET is adaptive and tests integrated skills, books help most with grammar, vocabulary and writing accuracy, while practice with real test-style questions builds the speed and format familiarity. Use this order:
|
Resource |
What it is for |
How to use it |
|
Free PDF from Duolingo: test structure, question types, scoring and rules |
Read it first; then take the official practice test on the DET site |
|
|
Oxford English Grammar Course (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced) |
Grammar explanation with exercises |
Pick the level that matches you; most students need Basic or Intermediate |
|
Practical English Usage, Michael Swan (Oxford University Press) |
Reference book for common grammar and usage doubts |
Look up errors you repeat in writing practice |
|
Word Power Made Easy, Norman Lewis |
Vocabulary building by word families |
Study 15 minutes a day, then use new words in your writing |
|
English Grammar in Use, Raymond Murphy (Cambridge University Press) |
Self-study grammar with exercises |
A good alternative or companion to the Oxford course |
Many Indian students also use Wren and Martin’s High School English Grammar and Composition and S.P. Bakshi’s Objective General English for grammar and sentence correction. They are not DET-specific, so use them only for the basics. Books titled “Duolingo English Test” from third-party sellers vary in quality, so check reviews and the publication date, and prefer the official guide for the actual format.
Understanding the Test Pattern and Scoring
According to the official guide, plan for about 1 hour of uninterrupted time: roughly 5 minutes of setup, about 45 minutes for the adaptive test, and about 10 minutes for the writing and speaking samples.
|
Part |
Details |
|
Adaptive test (about 45 minutes) |
Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking questions. Question types include Read and Select, Fill in the Blanks, Read and Complete, Listen and Type, Interactive Reading, Interactive Listening, Write About the Photo, Interactive Writing, Speak About the Photo, Read Then Speak and Interactive Speaking. |
|
Writing Sample (3 to 5 minutes) |
An extended written response to a prompt, sent to institutions with your results. |
|
Speaking Sample (1 to 3 minutes) |
A spoken response recorded on video and sent to institutions with your results. |
The overall score runs from 10 to 160 in 5-point increments. Individual subscores are Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening, and integrated subscores are Production, Literacy, Comprehension and Conversation. The overall score is the average of the individual subscores, rounded to the nearest 5. Question formats and names are updated by Duolingo from time to time, so check the current guide before the exam.

Free Resources and Apps for English Practice
- Official DET practice: Duolingo offers a free practice test and sample questions on its test website.
- BBC Learning English: free lessons for grammar, vocabulary and listening.
- Newspapers: read editorials from English-language newspapers daily and summarize them in your own words.
- Grammarly and Hemingway Editor: writing checkers; Grammarly has a free version with paid upgrades, and Hemingway has a free web editor. Use them to spot repeated errors, not to write your answers.
Practising on the regular Duolingo language-learning app can build general fluency, but it does not replicate the test format, so use official DET materials for exam practice.
Tips to Ace the DET
- Practice typing: speed and accuracy matter in Listen and Type and writing tasks.
- Practice all four skills: the adaptive test mixes them, so do not skip speaking or listening.
- Describe images clearly: name the main subject first, then background and action, then add detail.
- Speak clearly and naturally: avoid long pauses and fillers, and watch pronunciation and everyday phrases that sound unnatural in international English.
- Follow the proctoring rules: you need a valid government-issued photo ID, a phone camera recording your screen and keyboard, and a quiet room. No headphones, notes or other people. Violations can invalidate your result without a refund.
- Test your setup: check your microphone, webcam and internet before you start, and book your test within 21 days of purchase.
What Is a Good Duolingo Score?
There is no single “good” score for all universities. Requirements depend on the university, level and program, and many universities publish their own minimum on their admissions page. Check each university website and use Duolingo’s published comparison with IELTS and TOEFL scores as a guide. If you are aiming for a competitive program, plan extra time to improve your score and consider retaking the test, since Duolingo allows retakes.
Important for UK-bound students: for UK student visas, you need a test from the Home Office approved list. The UK government list names IELTS for UKVI, LANGUAGECERT, PTE Academic UKVI, Skills for English UKVI and Trinity tests. Duolingo is not on it, so a DET score cannot be used for the UK visa application itself, even if a university accepts it for admission.
