California Lutheran University (CLU or Cal Lutheran) is a private university located in Thousand Oaks, California. Established in 1959, the university is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America but is nonsectarian. Originally founded as California Lutheran College in 1960, it became California's first four-year liberal arts college and the inaugural four-year private college in Ventura County. On January 1, 1986, the institution changed its name to California Lutheran University. Situated on a 290-acre campus, 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles, Cal Lutheran offers a range of degrees at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, along with post-master's and post-bachelor's certificates. The university provides a variety of academic programs and opportunities for students to pursue their passions and interests. Cal Lutheran has multiple campuses located in different cities, including Woodland Hills (Los Angeles), Westlake Village, Oxnard, Santa Maria, and Berkeley. Cal Lutheran is known for its successful football program, which has produced numerous coaches who have gone on to work at different levels of the sport. The university has also had a significant impact on college baseball, with several student players being drafted into Major League Baseball.
