ECLA (European College of Liberal Arts) is the historical name of Bard College Berlin. Founded 1999 in Berlin-Pankow, ECLA became ECLA of Bard in 2011 and was renamed Bard College Berlin in 2013. The institution at Platanenstraße 24, Berlin-Pankow now officially operates as Bard College Berlin, A Liberal Arts University. Language and Thinking (L&T) is Bard College Berlin\\\'s signature two-week pre-semester intensive - one of the most rigorous writing preparation programs in European higher education. Students engage in close reading, argumentation, and analytical essay writing before the academic year begins. It defines the intellectual standard for all four years.
Students who meet the requirements receive two simultaneously conferred degrees: (1) BA from Bard College Berlin (German state-accredited, Berlin Senate, KMK-recognised across Germany) and (2) BA from Bard College, New York (US regionally accredited through Middle States Commission on Higher Education). Dual US+German degree.
Two BA programs: BA Humanities, the Arts, and Social Thought (HAST) - covering philosophy, literature, rhetoric, history, art history, film, theater, creative writing; and BA Economics, Politics, and Social Thought (EPST) - covering political theory, economics, sociology, human rights. Both share the Language & Thinking foundation and core curriculum.
