UK Now Allows Students to Switch to Innovator Founder Visa

Dec 4, 2025 Insights & Policy

New 2025 rules let international students apply for the Innovator Founder visa from within the UK, creating a smoother path from study to entrepreneurship.

The United Kingdom will introduce a major immigration change on 25 November 2025 that allows international students to switch to the Innovator Founder visa without leaving the country. This update removes a long-standing rule that required students to return home to file a new application. British officials say the change is designed to help promising graduates to retain their ideas, networks, and early-stage ventures within the UK rather than relocating them abroad.

Under the new framework, any student who holds a valid Study visa can apply for the Innovator Founder route from inside the UK. The visa is designed for individuals who want to set up an innovative business that is different from existing market offerings and endorsed by an approved organization. Applicants must meet English language requirements, prove financial savings, and submit their business idea for assessment. They must also show that funds used for maintenance have been held for 28 consecutive days.

The Innovator Founder visa allows a stay of up to three years. Holders can start businesses, bring dependents, and apply for settlement after meeting progress checks at the 12 month and 24-month stages. Processing times range from three to eight weeks depending on where the application is submitted.
