How Indian Students Can Apply for an Australia Student Visa

Dec 18, 2025 Insights & Policy

With over 1.59 lakh Indians enrolled, clarity and strong documentation are key as Australia tightens visa rules.

Australia remains one of the most popular options for Indian students, with more than 159,000 Indians enrolled across higher education and vocational institutes as of July 2025. As interest grows, competition for study visas is rising, particularly with the government’s focus on genuine applicants and stricter assessment standards. A clear, well-prepared application has now become essential.

The process begins with securing admission at a CRICOS registered institution. On selection, students receive a Confirmation of Enrolment, which is mandatory for the visa file. Applicants must then create an ImmiAccount on the Department of Home Affairs portal to submit documents and track progress.

Key requirements include academic records, English test scores, a valid passport, and proof of finances covering tuition, living costs and travel. Funds may be shown through bank statements, sanctioned loans or scholarships. Students must also purchase Overseas Student Health Cover and complete medical and biometric checks where required.

A strong Genuine Student statement remains central to the application, explaining the choice of course, its relevance and long term plans. Visa fees must be paid online before submission, after which processing typically takes four to twelve weeks.

As Australia shifts towards tighter visa integrity, students who present transparent intentions, complete documentation and early preparation stand a stronger chance of approval.
