Half of India’s Graduates Can’t Get Hired. Here’s Why That’s About to Change.

India’s higher education system has never been bigger. With over 4 crore students currently enrolled, the numbers look impressive on paper. But scale was never the finish line and the cracks in the Indian graduate employability (2026) are starting to show.

The India Skills Report 2026 puts graduate employability at 56.35%. Mercer’s Graduate Skill Index 2025, which applies stricter industry-readiness benchmarks, places it even lower at 42.6%. Together, the numbers tell one story: a significant share of Indian graduates are still entering the workforce underprepared.

Employers have noticed. A 2025 Indeed survey found that 80% of Indian employers now prioritise practical skills and experience over formal degrees. Forty-two percent of hiring managers say they simply cannot find candidates with the right capabilities.

The gap isn’t just technical. Recruiters increasingly want critical thinking, communication, and the ability to adapt, qualities that don’t emerge from lecture halls and semester-end exams alone.

The urgency is real. The World Economic Forum estimates that 63 out of every 100 Indian workers will need retraining by 2030. Nearly 40% of existing workplace skills are expected to become obsolete in the same period.

But the shift is already underway. Universities are beginning to redesign curricula backwards from capability, building in project-based learning, industry immersion, and AI integration. The goal is no longer just to produce degree-holders. It’s to produce professionals who can demonstrate what they know.

India has the demographic weight, the policy ambition through NEP 2020, and the talent base to lead. What it needs now is for institutions to measure success not by how many students they admit, but by what those students can actually do.
