Hundreds of thousands of Indian students apply to study in American universities every year — with many hoping to eventually land a job in the other country.
In recent years, India has witnessed an unprecedented wave of young Indian students moving abroad for higher education. The trend has become so pronounced that it is reshaping both the Indian education sector and global classrooms.
The decline represents a hit to the bottom line for Central Missouri, a small public university that operates close to its margins with an endowment of only USD 65 million. International students typically account for nearly a quarter of its tuition revenue.
The US Embassy in India said that a US Visa is only a privilege and not a right, and warned breaking US laws can have serious consequences on student visa.
College by college, institutions around US are seeing their financial models disrupted by the drop in international student enrolment.
The expenditure of Indian students on abroad studies have hit a five-year low in June 2025. This comes amid stricter rules and restriction on Indian students. However, the UK is gaining popularity as a study destination. Further. travel expenditures remain high.
