It was established in 1908 and is part of the University System of Ohio. The university's athletic teams, called the Penguins, participate in Division I of the NCAA. Youngstown State University is a member of the Horizon League for most varsity sports, except for football, which competes in the Football Championship Subdivision of the NCAA as part of the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
