Mills College was founded in 1852 in Benicia, California, as the Young Ladies Seminary, later relocating to Oakland and becoming one of the oldest women's colleges in the western United States. In 2022, following years of financial pressure, Mills completed a merger with Boston-based Northeastern University and now operates as Mills College at Northeastern University, a coeducational regional campus within Northeastern's global university network. The Oakland campus continues academic programs alongside the Mills Institute, dedicated to advancing women's leadership and social justice research established as part of the merger. Students at the Oakland campus have access to Northeastern's broader degree programs, co-op and experiential learning model, and its network of campuses across North America and in London.
