Olympia, United States
The Evergreen State College is a unique public liberal arts college situated in Olympia, Washington. It was established in 1967 and has since offered an unconventional undergraduate curriculum that allows students to personalize their course of study towards a degree or follow a predetermined path. In addition to standalone classes, full-time students have the option to enroll in interdisciplinary academic programs that enable them to explore various disciplines in a coordinated manner. Rather than traditional grades, the faculty at Evergreen provides students with substantive narrative evaluations of their work. The college's main campus, which spans 1,000 acres of forest near the southern end of Puget Sound, boasts its own saltwater beach. Evergreen also has a satellite campus located in nearby Tacoma. The college offers a range of degrees, including Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Environmental Studies, Master in Teaching, Master of Public Administration, and Master of Public Administration in Tribal Governance. Evergreen was one of several alternative colleges and programs that emerged during the 1960s and 1970s, often referred to as experiments. While many of these institutions have either closed or adopted more conventional approaches, Evergreen remains committed to its mission, despite experiencing a decline in enrollment.
