The Master of Urban Planning programme at AUS was established as the first professional urban-planning graduate course of its kind in the UAE. It aims to blend theory and practice: offering rigorous training in planning history, theory, urban design, land-use, environmental planning, and planning tools (e.g. computer applications, spatial analysis). At the same time, it emphasises real-world relevance: students learn to respond to “on-the-ground” challenges of growing, changing cities — from sustainable development and environmental constraints to housing, transportation, infrastructure and social equity. The programme values sustainability, social responsibility, and holistic thinking: preparing professionals who can thoughtfully balance economic, social, environmental, and design imperatives in urban development. The programme also fosters a professional network through partnerships with governmental bodies, academic and professional organisations, and NGOs — providing students with practical exposure and opportunities for collaboration and future employment.
