Australia Tightens PRISMS Checks for South Asia

India moves to higher assessment level as Australia sharpens focus on genuine students.

Australia has updated its PRISMS* country assessment levels for South Asia, placing India in Assessment Level 3 from January 8, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen visa integrity while continuing to support genuine international students.

Under Australia’s PRISMS framework, assessment levels reflect the level of documentation and scrutiny applied to student visa applications. Higher levels do not signal reduced demand, but indicate increased checks around financial proof, English language ability, and academic intent.

Along with India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal have also moved to Assessment Level 3, while Sri Lanka has shifted to Level 2. The Department of Education said the update is aimed at addressing emerging integrity issues and improving the quality of applications, not restricting student inflows.

Sector experts note that Australia remains committed to international education and is prioritizing transparency and compliance to protect long term student outcomes. For Indian applicants, the change underscores the importance of early preparation, clear financial documentation, and well aligned academic plans.

Institutions and advisers expect that students with strong profiles and genuine intent will continue to see steady visa outcomes, even as scrutiny increases.

Note:

Australia uses a system called PRISMS (Provider Registration and International Students Management System).
  • In this system, countries are given “assessment levels” based on how much risk there has been with student visa applications — especially issues like fraud or non-genuine applications.
Levels are roughly:
  • Level 1 — Lowest risk → less paperwork, faster decisions
  • Level 2 — Medium risk → moderate checks
  • Level 3 — Higher risk → more documentation & scrutiny
