Is the GRE compulsory for MS in the USA?

The Graduate Record Examination or GRE is a standardized test that is widely accepted by universities in the United States. It was previously a mandatory requirement at all institutions. But recently there have been changes to the admission procedure at many universities.

GRE scores are no longer mandatory for admission to many MS programs in the USA, and several institutions no longer require them. There is a more holistic approach for admission to MS courses that includes other factors such as work experience, and consistent academic record.

The changes were made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, during which most universities waived the GRE requirements for admissions to their programs. When normalcy resumed many institutions continued admission without mandatory GRE scores.

We look at some universities that offer top-notch MS courses without needing a GRE score.

Alternatives to the GRE to get admitted to universities in the USA

The question arises regarding how universities in the USA admit students to an MS program without any GRE score. How does an admission committee decide who to admit?

In the absence of GRE scores the universities give weightage to a number of factors. Let’s explore these factors in greater detail.

  • Academic Performance

The primary factor that universities look at is the overall academic performance and whether the student was consistently able to maintain a good GPA average during undergraduate study.

Grades in key subject areas related to the desired program such as good grades in math for those who want to study MS in Data Science are scrutinized more carefully.

  • Relevant Work Experience

Many MS programs give enormous importance to work experience. Applicants who have worked for a few years have a clear understanding of real-life situations.

A few years of experience is a more worthwhile factor than a good GRE score. This is particularly true for technology-driven programs such as cybersecurity, data science, and project management.

  • Statement of Purpose

The Statement of Purpose or SOP plays a crucial role in admissions without GRE scores. It offers applicants a unique opportunity to showcase their individuality to the admissions committee. They can place a representation of themselves that goes far beyond GRE scores.

The SOP has become vital for a successful application for an MS degree since it brings added depth to the application.

  • Personal Interviews

The advent of online meetings such as Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom has made it easy to ask for an interview. Many universities are doing just that. An online interaction allows the admissions committee to assess a candidate’s communication and interpersonal skills.

Interviews offer a more personal understanding of the applicant, which might not happen through an SOP and seldom through a test score.

Keep in mind that many other streams require standardized scores. These include,

  • GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) for business, and management programs.
  • MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) for medical schools.
  • LSAT (Law School Admission Test) for law schools.

Besides, all universities require standardized English test scores of TOEFL or IELTS.

How to apply to US Universities without a GRE?

There is no special process for applying to US universities without a GRE for admission.

Before the admission process begins, the school will mention if GRE scores are required. There may be schools that make it optional or completely waive the GRE score. Also, some universities require a GRE for a few courses but not all. These details are provided on the university website before the admission season begins.

In the absence of the GRE, you have to prepare the SOP with care. You must write a different SOP for each university you apply to.

To craft a compelling SOP, you should:

  • Conduct thorough research on the university and program
  • Write about relevant experiences and skills
  • State your research interests clearly
  • Show your passion and motivation

Always remember to edit and proofread the SOP meticulously before sending it.

FAQs

Can I apply to universities in the USA without a GRE?

Several universities in the US allow you to apply without a GRE score. We have given a list of the most well-known universities above.
Remember,
– The waiver may be for all the courses such as Purdue University.
– GRE might be required for some courses such as Masters in Naval Construction and Engineering at MIT

Is the GRE still required in the USA?

Many renowned universities such as Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, New York University, and Northwestern University require GRE for admission to courses in science and technology.
However, there is increasing awareness that the GRE score is not a good predictor of success in a graduate course. During COVID-19, there were concerns about access to a suitable testing environment. At that time universities stopped asking for GRE scores. A few years later, more institutions are permanently doing away with standardized test scores.
But, by and large, many universities still ask for a GRE score or make it optional. Perhaps in time that will change but currently GRE score is still relevant.

Can I pursue an MS in the USA without the GRE and IELTS?

You can pursue an MS without a GRE score. We have given above a comprehensive list of institutions that do not ask for GRE scores.
But IELTS is different. A US university has to be sure that a student can follow lectures and curricula in English. A test of the English language is therefore mandatory. If you are unable to provide an IELTS score, you have to provide a TOEFL score which is an equivalent examination of proficiency in English.

Can I get a scholarship without a GRE?

There is no reason why you cannot get a scholarship without a GRE. Schools do not make GRE scores a yardstick for awarding scholarships. Scholarships and fellowships are given based on academic excellence and financial need.
Different universities have different rules for granting financial aid. If you can display academic performance or financial need, you will surely be able to receive a scholarship.
