This article explains how the Fall 2026 intake in the USA works, and what you should be focusing on today. We will also advise you on how to approach the process if you are running late.

What is the Fall intake in the USA?

The Fall 2026 intake in the USA, with classes starting between August and September, is the main academic intake for top US colleges and universities. This is when most universities open admission to their full range of programs. Fall 2026 classes in US universities will begin around late August or early September.

Note these are the dates for application forms to be submitted, not admission

You have to send (online):

  • Statement of Purpose
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Resume

Is it possible to gain late admission to Fall 2026 USA intake?

If you are just starting to apply, it is time to move quickly. There are several colleges and universities where you can apply till March – April.

Here are a few universities that accept late application forms:

  • Arizona State University
  • Michigan State University
  • Pennsylvania State University
  • University of Alabama
  • University of Pittsburgh
  • University of Tulsa.

Phase 2: The Decision Phase (January 2026 to April 2026)

By late January, US universities begin sending admission letters. The exact time depends on your profile and the university and program you have applied to. Given the high volume of students from abroad, you might be waitlisted.

We suggest you send a Letter of Continued Interest reiterating why they are your #1 choice.

Phase 3: The Money Phase (March – May 2026)

US universities send official admission letters through online application portals and email. It might be followed by snail mail. You have to officially accept the offer.

Once you accept an offer, the university will ask for Proof of Funding before they issue your I-20 form. It is the primary document you need to apply for a visa.

What constitutes Proof of Funding?

Proof of funding for US universities requires you to show liquid funds to cover at least one year of tuition and living expenses (approximately between $50,000-$100,000).

Key Documents for Proof of Funding:

  • Bank Statements showing sufficient liquid funds
  • Loan sanction letter from a bank like SBI, ICICI, etc.
  • Official scholarship documentation.
  • If a sponsor in the USA is covering costs, you need an Affidavit of Support (Form I-134)

Phase 4: The F-1 Visa Battle (May – July 2026)

Once you have obtained Form I-20, it is time to apply for the F-1 visa. It will allow you to attend college and university in the USA and later stay for the OPT training.

  • Start by paying the $350 I-901 SEVIS fee online at FMJFee.com
  • Next, complete the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application (Form DS-160)
  • Schedule your appointment at a US Embassy or consulate. The US Embassy is in New Delhi, and there are consulates at Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Mumbai.

Take our advice – don’t wait for your preferred city. If a slot opens at Kolkata, take it.

Phase 5: Pre-Departure Logistics (July – August 2026)

Congratulations, you have the visa stamp! You are just a few days away from having coffee, pancakes, and maple syrup at a cafe near your university.

But before you board:

  • You must have proof of Covid vaccination to enter the USA. Other than Covid, each university has a different vaccination requirement depending on state laws. It is usually MMR, Tdap, Hepatitis B, and Meningococcal vaccines.
  • Buy health insurance. Hospital charges in the USA are exorbitant, and you need to buy a medical insurance plan before you depart. GradRight allows you to compare and buy the most affordable health care plans for studying in the USA.
  • Buy plane tickets at least 1 – 2 months in advance. In fact, we advise you to buy tickets as soon as you get an F-1 visa. Air India, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and Etihad offer student discounts.
