Western Michigan University, also known as Western or WMU, is a public research university located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States. It was originally established as Western State Normal School in 1903 by Governor Aaron T. Bliss with the purpose of training teachers. In 1957, it was renamed Western Michigan University. The university is one of the eight research universities in Michigan and is classified as "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity." It consists of seven degree-granting colleges and offers a wide range of undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and specialist degree programs. The university is governed by an eight-member board of regents appointed by the governor of Michigan and confirmed by the Michigan Senate. Western Michigan University's athletic teams, known as the Western Michigan Broncos, compete in Division I of the NCAA and participate in the Mid-American Conference for most sports.
