The university has an annual enrollment of over 50,000 students, making it the second-largest university in Ohio. It is part of the University System of Ohio. The University of Cincinnati holds the distinction of being the first university to implement a co-operative education (co-op) model. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is classified as "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity." According to the National Science Foundation, UC allocated $480 million for research and development in 2018, ranking 54th in the nation.
