The State University of New York at Buffalo, commonly known as the University at Buffalo (UB) and sometimes referred to as SUNY Buffalo, is a public research university with campuses in Buffalo and Amherst, New York, United States. Established in 1846 as a private medical college, it merged with the State University of New York system in 1962 and is one of the two flagship institutions of the SUNY system. UB, along with the University of Virginia, is one of the only colleges founded by United States Presidents. Classified as "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity," UB was elected to the Association of American Universities in 1989. The University at Buffalo's intercollegiate athletic teams are known as the Bulls, competing in Division I of the NCAA and being members of the Mid-American Conference.
