Northern Illinois University (NIU) is a public research university located in DeKalb, Illinois. It was established in 1895 as Northern Illinois State Normal School with the aim of producing college-educated teachers for the state. Apart from its main campus in DeKalb, NIU also has satellite centers in Chicago, Naperville, Rockford, and Oregon, Illinois. The university consists of seven colleges that offer various degree programs. NIU is one of the seven public universities in Illinois that participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. The university's athletic teams are called the Huskies and they compete in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The university is classified as "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".
