New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is a public research university located in Newark, New Jersey. It was founded in 1881 with the support of local industrialists and inventors, particularly Edward Weston. Originally known as Newark Technical School (NTS), the university opened its doors in 1885. NJIT offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs, including Bachelor of Science/Arts majors and Masters and PhD programs. The university also has an Honors College that collaborates with nearby institutions to provide professional programs in Healthcare and Law. NJIT is classified as an "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity" institution. It operates several observatories, including the Big Bear Solar Observatory, the Owens Valley Radio Observatory, and automated observatories in Antarctica, South America, and the US. The university is a member of the Sea Grant and Space Grant research consortia and has been involved in the McNair Scholars Program since 1999. Additionally, NJIT is a designated Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving institution (AANAPISI). The university's athletic teams, known as the "Highlanders," compete in the NCAA Division I America East Conference.
