It was established in 1860 as Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy. The campus, dedicated in 1926, features over 250 buildings designed by Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. Situated on a 650-acre plateau along the Mississippi River, the main campus has a rich historical district. LSU conducts numerous sponsored research projects, funded by prestigious agencies like the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and NASA.
