Lincoln University (LU) is a historically black university (HBCU) located near Oxford, Pennsylvania. It was originally established as the Ashmun Institute in 1854 and later became a public institution in 1972. Lincoln University is the second HBCU in Pennsylvania, succeeding Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. It holds the distinction of being the first HBCU in the United States to award college degrees. In addition to African American students, Lincoln University has a longstanding tradition of admitting students from diverse racial and national backgrounds. The university has been granting degrees to women since 1953, and in 2019, women made up 66% of the undergraduate student body.
