Johns Hopkins University, often abbreviated as JHU, is a private research university located in Baltimore, Maryland. Established in 1876, it was the first U.S. university based on the European research institution model. Named after its first benefactor, the American entrepreneur and Quaker philanthropist Johns Hopkins, the university was endowed with a significant bequest, the largest philanthropic gift in U.S. history at that time. The university also has a successful men's lacrosse team and competes in the Big Ten Conference. Additionally, the university's sports teams compete in Division III of the NCAA as members of the Centennial Conference.
