Elmira College, located in Elmira, New York, is a private college with a rich history. Founded in 1855, it was originally established as a college exclusively for women. In fact, it is the oldest college that granted degrees equivalent to those given to men. However, in 1969, Elmira College underwent a transition and became a coeducational institution offering programs for both men and women. The college is known for its distinctive colors, purple and gold, which symbolize the women's suffrage movement and the college flower, the iris. The campus itself showcases beautiful architecture, predominantly featuring Victorian and Collegiate Gothic styles. One of the notable features of Elmira College is the octagonal study, where the renowned author Mark Twain wrote many of his famous novels, such as "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" and "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Additionally, the campus is home to Quarry Farm, a place where the Clemens family, including Mark Twain, spent over twenty summers. This location now serves as a research facility for scholars studying Twain's work. Furthermore, Elmira College proudly hosts the International Conference On The State of Mark Twain Studies every four years, further emphasizing its connection to the author's legacy.
