California State University, Northridge (CSUN or Cal State Northridge) is a public university located in the Northridge neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. It is one of the largest comprehensive universities in the United States. The university has a significant impact on the California economy. CSUN initially started as the Valley satellite campus of California State University, Los Angeles, and became an independent college in 1958. In 1972, it adopted its current name. The 1994 Northridge earthquake caused extensive damage to the campus. CSUN offers a wide range of bachelor's and master's degree programs, as well as doctoral degrees and teaching credentials. The university is classified as "Master's Colleges & Universities: Larger Programs" and is recognized as a Hispanic-serving institution.
