The University at Buffalo (UB) is a public research university located in Buffalo and Amherst, New York. Originally established in 1846 as a private medical college, UB later merged with the State University of New York (SUNY) system in 1962. Today, it is considered one of SUNY's flagship institutions. UB has undergone significant growth and development since its founding, evolving from a small medical school into a comprehensive research university. It is home to various schools and colleges, including the largest state-operated medical school, dental school, education school, business school, engineering school, pharmacy school, and SUNY's only law school. UB is known for its commitment to research and is classified as an "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity" institution. In recognition of its research contributions, UB became a member of the Association of American Universities in 1989. The university's intercollegiate athletic teams, known as the University at Buffalo Bulls, compete in NCAA Division I and are affiliated with the Mid-American Conference.
