Auburn University, located in Auburn, Alabama, USA, is a public land-grant research university. It is recognized as one of the state's two flagship public universities and holds the classification of "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity." Established in 1856 as East Alabama Male College, Auburn transformed under the Morrill Act in 1872, becoming the state's inaugural land-grant university. It was originally a private liberal arts college affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Auburn pioneered coeducation in Alabama, becoming the state's first four-year coeducational school in 1892. It was later renamed Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1899 and then Auburn University in 1960 to reflect its expanded academic programs and comprehensive curriculum. The university has an additional campus in Montgomery, which is governed by the Auburn University Board of Trustees as part of the Auburn University system.
