Leeds Beckett University (LBU), formerly known as Leeds Metropolitan University (LMU) and before that as Leeds Polytechnic, is a public university located in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It operates campuses in the city centre and Headingley. The university's history dates back to 1824 with the establishment of the Leeds Mechanics Institute. Leeds Polytechnic was created in 1970 and was initially under the Leeds Local Education Authority until it gained independent Higher Education Corporation status on April 1, 1989. It achieved university status in 1992, and the current name, Leeds Beckett University, was adopted in September 2014. As of the 2016–17 fiscal year, the institution reported an annual income of £221.4 million, with £3.4 million coming from grants and contracts. Expenditure for the same period amounted to £217.1 million.
