Heriot-Watt University is a public research university located in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was established in 1821 as the School of Arts of Edinburgh and later became the world's first mechanics' institute. In 1966, it was granted university status by royal charter. The university takes its name from Scottish inventor James Watt and Scottish philanthropist and goldsmith George Heriot. It has a strong focus on science and engineering and is considered one of the 23 colleges that gained university status in the 1960s. The university has campuses in Scotland, the UAE, and Malaysia.
