Study Abroad Feels Hopeless. MOTF Is Changing That.

Study Abroad Feels Hopeless

Table of Contents

Sorry to poke your wounds, but if you are going to study abroad, one or more of the following has happened to you (or will happen).

1. You open your laptop at midnight to check if your application status has changed. You knew it wouldn’t. But you checked anyway.

2. Your father asks you at dinner, “so how much exactly will this cost?” and the room goes quiet because you don’t have a number that won’t scare him.

3. You’ve written four versions of your SOP and each one sounds like someone else. Because you copied the structure from a YouTube video that said “this got me into Columbia.”

4. Your mother’s colleague’s son went to the US two years ago and now everyone in your family treats him like he figured out life. You’re not sure you want what he has. But you’re not sure what you want instead.

5. You’ve spent ₹1.5 lakhs on test prep, ₹40,000 on GRE and TOEFL fees, and you haven’t even started paying application fees yet. Your parents think the big expense is tuition. They don’t know about the small expenses that have already started piling up.

6. A consultant told you your “profile is average” and you should “aim realistic.” You don’t know what that means but it made you feel small.

7. You joined three WhatsApp groups for Fall 2026 aspirants. Everyone seems to know more than you. Half the advice contradicts the other half. You’re more confused than before you joined.

8. You’ve never spoken to a single person at any of the universities you’re applying to. Not a professor. Not an alumni. Not even a current student. You’re about to spend ₹30 lakhs on a place you’ve only seen in a website photo gallery.

9. Sometimes, late at night, you wonder if this whole thing is even for people like you.

I know this because I’ve heard every single one of these from students I’ve spoken to. Thousands of them, over the past six years.

The process is broken in a way nobody talks about

Here’s what studying abroad actually looks like for most Indian students right now.

You study for exams alone. You write SOPs alone.

You pick universities based on rankings you don’t fully understand or advice from people who went through a completely different process five years ago.

You upload documents to portals. You pay fees. And then you wait.

At no point in this journey does a human being from the university actually look at you. Not your face. Not your thinking. Not the way you solve a problem or ask a question or challenge an idea. You are a file. A GPA, a test score, a 500-word essay, and a recommendation letter.

That’s the real problem.

And that’s also why I’ve never been as excited in my life as Masters of the Future (MOTF) has made me.

Masters of the Future (MOTF) — The Most “Hopeful and Positive” Thing For Indian Study Abroad Aspirants

Masters of the Future is a national championship organized by GradRight in partnership with US universities.

It’s built for final-year students and working professionals who are keen on a master’s abroad.

But what makes it different from every other competition or education fair is this: the admissions teams are in the room. They’re not reading your file from 8,000 miles away. They’re watching you solve a real problem. They’re seeing how you perform under pressure.

And alongside them, you’ve got CXOs. These are people like Sarbvir Singh from PolicyBazaar, Kapil Bharati from Delhivery, Bipin Preet Singh from MobiKwik. They won’t come to MOTF to deliver keynote lectures but to actually sit with you, listen to your ideas, push back, and ask questions.

For the first time, you’re not a file. You’re a person in the room.

Prof. Timothy Solberg from WashU’s Olin Business School, who was at the first edition, said the standard of work from the finalist teams showed students were well prepared for Olin’s most selective master’s programs. That’s not something you hear after reading someone’s SOP. That’s what happens when someone actually watches you work.

And then there’s the money

I can’t write about hope for Indian students without talking about money. Because for most families, the expense sheet of studying abroad is where hope goes to die.

So let me be specific.

  1. MOTF gives you access to a ₹5 Crore scholarship pool, which is the largest in India attached to any event like this. These are real scholarships from partner universities, not vague “up to” numbers.

  2. There are prizes worth over ₹4 lakhs in cash and tech products. For context, that’s more than what most students spend on their entire application cycle.

  3. The winning team gets a sponsored one-way flight ticket to the US. That’s ₹60,000–80,000 a family doesn’t have to find.

  4. And there’s priority access to education loans up to ₹1 Crore. For families from smaller towns (and I’ll tell you that 80% of the students on GradRight’s loan platform are from tier-2 and tier-3 cities) having priority access instead of running from bank to bank changes everything.

One scholarship can be the difference between going and not going. I’ve seen that happen. More than once.

What I’ve actually seen happen

I was there at the first MOTF. Thirty finalists. Two days. Students from across India; some from colleges you’d recognize, many from colleges you wouldn’t.

By the end of day two, something had shifted.

Students who walked in nervously were presenting ideas to a room full of CXOs with a clarity that surprised even them.

People who’d never met before were exchanging numbers and making plans.

A few got scholarship offers that genuinely changed the math on whether they could go abroad.

Prof. John Lungo from Rutgers Business School said the level of talent and ambition he saw was truly exceptional — and that Rutgers looks forward to welcoming those students. That’s not a line from a brochure. That’s a professor who watched students work for two days and meant what he said.

But the thing I remember most isn’t the prizes or the scholarships. It’s the look on a student’s face when someone important looked at their work and said, “This is good. Tell me more.”

For some of them, that was the first time anyone outside their own family had said that.

When I talk of MOTF, hope is not a marketing word

I’ve been at GradRight since almost the beginning. I’ve talked to thousands of students. Most of them have the talent. Most of them have the drive. What they don’t have is a system that meets them halfway.

MOTF isn’t perfect. It won’t fix everything that’s broken about studying abroad.

But it’s the closest thing I’ve seen to a platform that gives you a shot, not because of where you studied or how much your family can spend, but because of how you think.

If you’re that student, the one checking your portal at midnight, the one wondering if this is even for people like you, I want you to know something.

It is for you.
