New Zealand has announced major changes to its work visa framework, introducing new employment rules for open work visa holders from April 2026 and expanding post-study work options to help international graduates transition into jobs more effectively.
New Zealand has unveiled two significant immigration updates for international students, including Indians, aimed at simplifying work pathways after graduation.
From April 20, 2026, open work visas will be divided into two categories. Post Study Work Visa holders and partners of students or workers will be allowed to work freely across roles, including self-employment and business ownership. In contrast, Working Holiday Visa and Migrant Exploitation Protection Visa holders will be restricted to employer-based roles and cannot run businesses.
Additionally, all open work visa holders will be barred from hiring employees through businesses they own.
The country will also introduce a new Short Term Graduate Work Visa in late 2026, allowing eligible graduates to stay and work for up to six months. This applies to those completing at least 24 weeks of full-time study but not qualifying for longer-term visas.
Further, eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa has been expanded to include Graduate Diploma holders, with visa duration aligned to study length, up to one year.
The changes are designed to provide clearer, more flexible pathways from education to employment in New Zealand.
