Indian students have become the largest group of international learners in the United Kingdom, surpassing China in both study visas and post study work approvals, reflecting strong mobility momentum and sustained demand.
Indian nationals have emerged as the largest cohort of international students in the United Kingdom, according to migration data for the year ending December 2025. A total of 95,231 sponsored study visas were issued to Indian applicants, compared to 89,019 for Chinese students.
Post study employment pathways also show strong Indian participation. Under the Graduate Route, 90,153 extensions were granted to Indian nationals, accounting for around 42 percent of all approvals. The route allows graduates to remain in the UK for two years, or three years for doctoral students.
Refusal rates for Indian study visas remained low at about four percent, indicating strong application preparedness and compliance.
The growth follows post Brexit immigration reforms introduced in 2021 and reflects rising interest among Indian families seeking international exposure, research opportunities and structured post study work options. The trend underscores India’s growing influence in shaping the UK’s higher education landscape.
