About Master’s in Business Analytics in the USA

The MS in Business Analytics is a sought-after postgraduate degree in the US. This program opens doors to careers in finance, technology, healthcare, and consulting. It also leads to opportunities in unique fields like sports and entertainment.

MSBA programs train you on how to collect, analyze, and use big data to make business decisions. The idea is to take current (and past) data, to make changes for the future of a business. Just as an example, say you’re an MSBA grad who works in pharma. You’d take the data from new drugs, or new studies, and analyze it to see what’s working and what’s not. Or, if you work in one of the non-conventional fields like entertainment, you’d look at things like on what days your theme park performs the best.

Now the MS in Business Analytics in the USA is a quant-focussed degree and is considered to be a specialized master’s. As a result, MSBA degrees require applicants to have taken advanced math in their undergraduate course — with calculus. It’s quite common for graduates to get high-paying ($90,000+) jobs after an MS in Business Analytics in the US.

The only other point to mention is that the electives you take can impact the fees for an MS in Business Analytics in the US, so bear that in mind. Now that we’re done with the curriculum, let’s understand the eligibility for an MS in Business Analytics in the US.

Eligibility for studying an MSBA in the US

An MS in Business Analytics in the USA (and elsewhere) is a very specialized course. Because of that, the entry requirements are more stringent than, say, a general-purpose MBA. Here are the requirements for an MS in Business Analytics in the US.

Prerequisite Category Details Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution is required. Preferably with a strong quantitative background (i.e. economics, math, finance, science, engineering, etc).
Prerequisite Courses Courses in Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus, Statistics, and Probability are often required. These courses ensure a solid foundation in essential quantitative skills.
Computer Programming Knowledge Proficiency in programming languages like Python, R, SQL, or Java. Some programs may also expect familiarity with C++. UCLA, MIT, UTD, and Texas McCombs emphasize this.
Standardized Academic Tests GRE or GMAT scores are required. You cannot pursue an MS in Business Analytics in the USA without GRE or GMAT scores.
English Proficiency Tests TOEFL or IELTS scores are mandatory for non-native speakers. Waivers are available if the undergraduate degree was entirely in English and lasted at least four years.
Professional or Academic Recommendations At least one letter of recommendation (LOR) is required, with two preferred. If two professional LORs are unavailable, one professional and one academic may be accepted.
Statement of Purpose (SOP) An SOP is typically required. This document should articulate your interest and preparedness for the program.
Work Experience Relevant work or research experience in a quantitative discipline can strengthen an application. Not always mandatory, but highly beneficial.

And with that, we come to the end of the section on the eligibility for an MS in Business Analytics in the US. In the next section we’ll cover the GMAT and GRE scores that you would require to enroll in the program.

GMAT/ GRE requirements for studying an MSBA in the USA

  • When applying for an MS in Business Analytics in the US, universities heavily focus on your ability to handle quantitative tasks. This ability is assessed through standardized tests like the GRE or GMAT. Note: the GMAT is particularly valued as it is more oriented towards quantitative skills.
  • Several top universities, including UCLA, Boston University, UTD, and MIT, accept GRE scores for MSBA applications.
  • For instance, the average GRE Quantitative score for an applicant at UCLA is 167, while at Boston University, which ranks 25th on the QS list for this program, the acceptable score is 166. This data helps illustrate the competitive nature of these programs at high-ranking institutions.
  • On the other hand, some universities do not require the GMAT or GRE for admission.
  • For instance, the University of Texas at Austin, ranked 9th, clearly says that the GMAT and GRE are optional for MSBA admissions.

Scholarships to study an MS in Business Analytics in the USA

Firstly, there are scholarships offered by the government of India (and other corporations) to Indians looking to study overseas. Below are some examples of these.

Source Scholarship Type Details
J. N. Tata Endowment Loan Scholarships Offers loan scholarships to Indian students for postgraduate studies abroad.
Government of India Various Scholarships offered by different Indian government ministries and bodies.
Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Overseas Scholarships Awards scholarships to young Indians for full-time Master’s, MPhil, or Doctorate programs at top global institutions.
Tata Trusts Merit and Need-Based Provides scholarships for Indian students pursuing higher education in India and abroad.
Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships Merit-Based Provides outstanding Indians the opportunity to study at selected USA. colleges and universities in selected areas, including Business Analytics.

However, the level of competition for these scholarships is rather high. It’s not uncommon to see more than 10,000 students applying for just ten scholarships.

A better (and more realistic) bet would be to get funding from your target university. Most MSBA programs in the USA will be eligible for some sort of funding from the university. For instance, take a look at these scholarships, offered by various USA universities for MSBA programs.

University Aid Details
MIT MIT Sloan provides fellowships and assistantships to admitted students based on various criteria including academic excellence and professional promise. All admitted candidates are considered for these awards, with no separate application required for most.
UCLA UCLA Anderson offers MSBA Fellowships based on merit and need, automatically considered upon admission. International students can also apply for external scholarships and fellowships provided by private organizations.
Boston University Boston University offers various financial aid options, including scholarships and loans. International students may need to apply with a creditworthy USA citizen or permanent resident as a co-signer.
Duke University Duke University offers merit scholarships based on academic achievements, leadership qualities, community involvement, and extracurricular activities. All admitted applicants are automatically considered. International students may also apply for no-cosigner loans to cover up to 100% of their Cost of Attendance.

And those were just some examples — there are hundreds more. Just do your due diligence and you are bound to find something that will suit your requirements.

Remember, even if you don’t get a great 50% scholarship, you can still work part-time.

Lastly, most MS in Business Analytics programs in the USA are STEM-designated. This means you can work in the USA for up to 36 months after graduating. With the high salaries offered to MSBA grads, the financial burden shouldn’t be a major cause for concern.
