The University of Western Ontario, also known as Western University, is a public research university situated in London, Ontario, Canada. The campus is spread across a vast area of land, surrounded by residential neighborhoods and divided by the Thames River. The university comprises twelve academic faculties and schools. It was established on 7 March 1878 by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth of the Anglican Diocese of Huron, originally named the Western University of London, Ontario. The university merged with Huron College, which was founded in 1863. Initially, the university had four faculties: Arts, Divinity, Law, and Medicine. However, it became non-denominational in 1908 and formed affiliations with various denominational colleges from 1919 onwards. In the years following World War II, the university experienced significant growth, adding several faculties and schools. Western University is co-educational and has a global network of over 306,000 alumni. It is a member of the U15, a prestigious group of research-intensive universities in Canada. The university's varsity teams, known as the Western Mustangs, participate in the Ontario University Athletics conference of U Sports.
