The United Kingdom remains the top overseas study destination for Chinese students in 2026, while Hong Kong rises to second place and the United States drops to third amid policy uncertainty and rising costs.
The United Kingdom has retained its position as the most preferred study abroad destination for Chinese mainland students in 2026, according to a new report by New Oriental Education and Technology Group.
Hong Kong has moved to second place for the first time in 12 years, driven by proximity, safety and cultural familiarity. The United States has slipped to third, reflecting growing concerns around policy stability and post study work opportunities.
The report, based on responses from nearly 7,000 students and parents, highlights a broader shift in student priorities. Cost has become a key factor, with total study abroad budgets reaching a 12 year high of 605,000 yuan in 2026.
Students are also adopting a more cautious approach, with many applying to multiple countries to reduce risk. Engineering remains the most popular field, accounting for 22 percent of applications.
Despite rising costs, demand for international education remains strong, with students viewing it as a long-term investment in global career opportunities.
