Wesleyan University, located in Middletown, Connecticut, is a prestigious private liberal arts university. It was established in 1831 and was initially a men's college affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church. The college was named after John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, making it the first educational institution to be named after him. Although it was originally a religious institution, Wesleyan University is now a secular school. While it began accepting female applicants in 1872, it did not become fully co-educational until 1970. Prior to this, supporters of women's education founded Connecticut College in 1912. Wesleyan University boasts an impressive list of alumni, including Truman Scholars, MacArthur fellows, and Rhodes Scholars.
